The Orange County Wedding Season Is Here

About a year ago I started shooting a couple of weddings, and I was a bit shocked at how much I enjoyed capturing the intimate joy that exist during a wedding day. Looking back, I am not sure why I waited this long to start doing weddings alongside my portrait and head shot work.

I think a big part of the reason for this newfound passion has to do with a number of things. The main reason, if you have ever heard about Enneagram (if not, look it up at the Ennegram Institute), I am what is considered a 1. It is basically a detail oriented and focus driven person. With that in mind, I am not too surprised that I enjoy capturing all the details and hard work that the wedding couple has put in to their wedding. Another reason would definitely be that it is such a special feeling to be invited to a very unique day, a day of celebrating that two people have decided to share all the laughs and cries for the rest of their lives.

This coming week I will kicking off my wedding season in Newport Beach, followed by other weddings throughout Orange County. I was told by two couples that I met with last year, that they were very surprised by my approach to booking weddings. They had contacted a couple of other photographers and had been told that unless they basically spent a couple months’ worth of mortgage payments on services and features that they did not want, they would never find a photographer that would do a good job or invest their time and passion. Given that a wedding day should be a once in a lifetime moment, I am a firm believer in that you need to feel comfortable with the photographer you hire. If you meet someone for the first time, or do not feel a level of trust for the photographer, it is going to bring more stress to an already emotional day.

Schedule Your Wedding Test Session

This is why I always offer a potential client a complimentary test session. The main reason for this session is for the couple and I to get a chance to meet in a casual environment, e.g. park or beach to get to know each other a bit. This way they get to ask whatever questions they may have, as well as share any specific requests for certain photos they would like to see captured. It also gives me a chance to hear about their day, hear their story, learn about which people would be key to capture etc. I also make sure we set aside some time to get a couple of shots in so that they have an idea of what to expect on their wedding day, but also how I approach and direct the portrait sessions.

I am incredibly excited for the 2019 wedding season, and cannot wait to share by experiences with you.

Everyone Deserves a Birthday Celebration

This month I had the pleasure of shooting for a company that focuses on something that is dear to me, children. More precisely, the well-being of children and making sure that they are not robbed of their dignity. A while back I signed up to volunteer my photography services to a company called Together We Rise, a company that works with children in foster homes. If you are unfamiliar with this organization, this is how they explain who, and what they do;

“Together We Rise is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization comprised of motivated young adults and former foster youth. Our vision is to improve the lives of children in foster care, who often find themselves forgotten and neglected by the public. We collaborate with individuals, companies, and community partners to bring resources to foster youth and use service-learning activities to educate volunteers on issues surrounding the foster care system.

TWR works with hundreds of foster agencies, social workers, CASA advocates, and other partners to bring our programs to foster youth across the nation. Our foundation has allowed us to provide thousands of foster youth across the country with new bicycles, college supplies, and sweet cases so that children do not have to travel from home to home with their belongings in a trash bag.”

Last month they contacted me about doing some work for them. I went to their office to learn a bit more about their organization, and what they had in mind for this job. The focus this month was their birthday boxes, and finding a way to capture the fun involved in celebrating a birthday. It really hit me hard when I learned how many of all the children in foster care are stripped of their dignity as they have to carry all their belongings in a plastic bag, never get to celebrate their birthday, or even have anything that’s just theirs. So, a while back I invited me nieces and nephews over, because if anyone knows how to thoroughly enjoy a birthday party, they are the ones. Seeing my kitchen covered in soap bubbles, confetti, popped balloons, glitter, candy powder, cake crumbles, well you name it – was just amazing!

What do you think? Does it look like a fun birthday party?

Snapshots from Huntington Beach sessions

This spot has quickly become a favorite for holiday sessions this season. During my scheduled mini sessions, this location filled up right away, and by popular demand, I have come back numerous times during the last couple of weeks. If you would like to know what’s so special about it, let’s schedule a session as well.

Thanksgiving Session in Seal Beach

Thanksgiving. A Holiday for family to get together. This year I did just one session during this Holiday, and I’m so glad that I did. This family are close friends, mainly to my wife’s side of the family, but since I moved here they’ve become a big part of my own life. So when they asked if I could meet them at the Seal Beach pier on Thanksgiving morning for some family photos, I was happy to. Their son and his family moved to the east coast a couple of years ago and only come home so often, so that made this session so much more special.

Family session in Irvine

This month I was able to meet up with this fun-filled family at a park in Irvine for a family session. Their son is such a ham, and absolutely loved being in front of the camera. It didn’t take very long before they were all busy goofing off, and for a moment they seemed to forget I was there taking their photos. Posed photos can definitely look great, but there is something very magic about candid moments that always gets me excited.

The beaches are filled with fun and laughter, the ice cream tastes better, and we tend to spend more time outside. Whether you’re on vacation, or you’re just spending time with near and dear family members, I have listed 5 things to help you improve on your family photography skills this summer.

Late Summer Maternity Pictures of My Love

Last weekend I was able to find a bit of time between sessions and editing to take these beautiful pictures of Bethany. It fills me with excitement (and a bit of nervousness) to know that we are expecting our third baby this summer. I think there is something magical about a pregnant woman, and this mom leaves me breathless. I’m so thankful for everything you do for our family, and the things you endure and go through to make sure our baby boy has a safe ride. So thankful for you!READ MORE

The Value of a Professional Photographer

During a recent family photography session, I was asked what I do with all the unedited photos and if the client could have them. The question sort of caught me by surprise. Once I had explained why they wouldn’t be able to get all of them, even if I didn’t have to spend time editing them, it made me realize that this is a really good question. I would say it would be a good question from two perspectives. One, as a client I could see why you would think that it isn’t a big deal to ask for them. Especially since all I did was press a button. Two, as the photographer, I strive to give my clients the very best photographs from our session. Each session I set out to deliver a minimum amount of digital images, but I often strive to give you more to make sure you feel like I didn’t hold something back.READ MORE

Family Getaway in San Clemente

A couple of years ago, my wife and I spent a couple of nights in San Clemente for the first time. During our first day there, we absolutely fell in love with this little town. For those of you who live in southern California, you may not have paid much attention to its existence. I am definitely one of those drivers that rarely pay attention to what towns I pass on the freeway.  San Clemente was one of them, as we would often speed past it on our way to San Diego for vacations or day trips.READ MORE
